Newark mentoring program to link high schoolers, youngsters

Newark will expand a mentoring program targeting city youth by encouraging high school students to watch out for their younger peers, officials said. Mayor Cory Booker said he will announce today the creation of an inter-school mentoring program that will initially identify students from Central High School to mentor their younger counterparts at the 18th Avenue School. City officials said similar mentoring programs were slated for Barringer and Abington High Schools.

Mayor Cory Booker came under fire early in his term when the execution-style murders of three college-bound teens captured national headlines last summer, further painting Newark as a city rampant with crime. That notion was cemented when one of the perpetrators arrested in those murders turned out to be 15 years old.
