Newark will expand a mentoring program targeting city youth by encouraging high school students to watch out for their younger peers, officials said. Mayor Cory Booker said he will announce today the creation of an inter-school mentoring program that will initially identify students from Central High School to mentor their younger counterparts at the 18th Avenue School. City officials said similar mentoring programs were slated for Barringer and Abington High Schools.
Booker said he will announce the program at City Hall to promote National Mentoring Month, and use the occasion to recommit with a coalition of public, private and nonprofit entities that have helped recruit mentors for Newark’s youth.
“It’s so critical for us,” he said of joining forces again with the Newark Mentoring Coalition.
